Secondary School Education Support to Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children (OVC)
JOWI-F members subscription funds, individual members contributions and in partnership with:
- Bhagwanji Raja Charitable Foundation (BRCF);
- The Saturday Charitable Trust;
- Lalitchandra Popatlal Doshi & Nilam L. Doshi Charitable Trusts; and,
- Shree Jain Swetambar (Temple)
December 2015 to Date (ongoing and open ended support)
In partnership with the above Charitable Trusts, JOWI-F prioritized Secondary and Tertiary Education support to a total of 12 OVC (6M:6F) undertaking their education in different institutions in Kenya. All the 12 OVC are drawn from Rarieda Sub-County, Siaya County. The Education support to the OVC included:
- Provision of school uniforms;
- Provision of scholastic materials;
- School fees subsidy;
- Sanitary pads and pants for girls;
- Training on menstrual management for girls;
- Career guidance programs for schools attended by the OVC;
- School based silent mentorship;
- Market based skill building (Vocational Training support);
JOWI-F further extended support to the families (siblings and caregivers) of the above 12 OVC benefitting from Education support. Using our household “Vulnerability Assessment” tool and “Case Management and Planning” process, the 12 OVC households with an estimated population of 60 (adults and children) have benefitted, depending on need, from some/or all of our enlisted nine (9) services and key interventions (Ref: as detailed in our “Services and key Interventions” section of the website).
Siaya County is leading, out of the 47 Counties in Kenya, with the highest number of adults infected with HIV in the Country, recording a prevalence of 21% (Kenya HIV Estimates 2018). The National adult HIV incidence rate was estimated at 4.9% with the prevalence higher among women (5.2%) than men (4.5%). The national adult HIV incidence rate is estimated at 4.9%. The County contributed 21% and 10.8% of the total new HIV infections in Kenya among children and adults respectively.
