Case Study-Fenny and Family Supported by JOWI-F [Year 2016]

The journey began with receipt of funding from B.R.C.F. in December 2015. Fenny is one of the many Vulnerable Children profiled for support by JOWI-F. Her story touched the heart of many and finally become a story for the year. Fenny Atieno at the age 14 years old is now a happy girl that her story has become a source of livelihood and hope to the family.

Fenny with her siblings Moses and Margaret

The journey started from Fenny, her two siblings and their mother sharing this small house in Siger village, Rarieda Sub-County, Siaya County. However, the Visit by JOWI-F Committee members brought a new dawn to this family. The life of suffering and desperation changed to a life of hope. Fenny is very hopeful and sure that she will make a difference in her life and that of her family. The offer by JOWI-F to support the repair of the family’s house, construction of a pit latrine and purchase of basic requirements to the family have positively impacted on the family as described below.

Fenny’ mother who live positively with HIV have had a peace of mind as she did not have to worry about the school fees, examination fees and scholastic requirements of her children. She has gained some strength and now able to prepare lunch for her children. “We have been rescued from the cold and water that used to enter our house whenever it rained” said Fenny’s mother.

This also is what Fenny had to say. “Since the visit by JOWI-F and subsequent support, I have never missed school. I have solar lamp to study at night, my books and our clothes are safe in the metal box and that has given me and my brother Moses the opportunity to concentrate on our studies and our performance have improved. May God bless and give JOWI-F members long life. They have made us happy and equal to other children in our community. We have been saved from sleeping on hard surface to a mattress and blankets that have made our life comfortable”.

Academic Performance after the Support

The visit boosted Fenny’s morale and her academic performance improved afterwards.

Term 1 that ended in April 2016, Fenny obtained position 2 out of 29 pupils in class 8. Term 2 Fenny obtained position 1 out of 29 pupils. She has sat for her 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. She is confident about KCPE results and is sure of joining a National Secondary School.

Fenny’s brother, Moses’ performance has incrementally improved as a result of support by JOWI-F. During first term was position 30 out of 39 with 379, term 2 he obtained position 22 out of 47 with 373 marks and in term 3, he was position 32 out of 45 with 442 marks.

The assessment conducted by JOWI-F proved that the condition of the old house was beyond economic repair. This promted the need to support construction of a new house. The house contruction is in progress as shown in the picture above and the church where the family worshsips pledged to help Fenny’s familiy in traditional smearing of the house.

Once again thanks to JOWI-F for having restored the lost hope and giving this family their happiness’ and opportunity to enjoy life.

Case Study- Beryl and Winnie’s Family [Year 2016]

In 2016, Beryl (Middle) and Winnie (right) are total orphans and they both received support from JOWI-F to cover their school levies. They were also supported with new school uniform which included 2 pullovers, 4 dresses, 4 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of shoes and 2 mattresses. Beryl was born with HIV and other chronic health conditions and has to put on very light shoes because of her health condition.

Winnie has borne the burden of carrying Beryl on her back to and from school as well as taking on most of the household chores with devastating effects on her academic and natural growth processes. JOWI-F has engaged a bicycle taxi to take them to and from school to reduce this burden.
